Does your power bank also discharge quickly? These 5 reasons can be responsible, people make mistakes

Power bank has become a necessity for everyone nowadays. We use it while going out, traveling or for longer battery life. But many times it is seen that the power bank gets discharged very quickly. People think that maybe it is bad, but in most of the cases it is not a fault but happens due to normal reasons. The main reasons are two: loss in energy transfer and cheap or low capacity batteries. Apart from these, some other things also play a role in this.

The biggest reason is energy conversion loss i.e. some power is lost in energy transfer. The power bank has a lithium battery, which works at 3.7 volts. But to charge a phone or device, 5 volts or more is required. In converting this voltage, the circuit gets heated and 30-40% of the energy is converted into heat. Meaning, if your power bank is of 10,000 mAh, then it can provide only 6000-7000 mAh to the phone.

This loss increases further when fast charging (like PD or QC) is used, because higher speed produces more heat. That’s why the power bank appears empty quickly, while in reality it is doing its job.

Another important reason is cheap or low quality batteries. Very cheap power banks are available in the market, in which the actual capacity is less. The company writes 20,000 mAh, but there is only a 10,000-12,000 mAh battery inside. Such batteries discharge quickly and become weaker with repeated use.

Batteries of good brands (like Anker, Mi, Ambrane) are better, but expensive. Apart from this, there are some other reasons also: Self-discharge: The power bank slowly loses charge even when not in use. A good battery loses 2-3% per month. If not used for months, the charge may reduce significantly.

• Effect of temperature: The battery discharges quickly in heat (like when kept in a car). It works better if kept in a cool, dry place.
• Cable or connection: Even with a bad cable or the phone being plugged in, some power leaks.

What to do to reduce the problem?

1. Buy a good quality power bank, check the rating.
2. Use normal instead of fast charging.
3. Keep 50% charge when not in use and store in a cool place.
4. If it is old then buy a new one, because the life of the battery reduces after 500-1000 charge cycles.
5. Quick discharge of power bank is mostly due to physics and quality and not any major fault. If used wisely, it will help you for a long time.
