Apart from cash incentives, the government will also give some other relaxations.

New Delhi. The Rekha Gupta-led government is preparing to bring a new scheme to reduce the increasing pollution on the roads of the national capital. Its objective is to encourage Delhiites to abandon their old and polluting vehicles and adopt electric vehicles (EV). The government will not only give cash incentives to those buying EVs, but will also provide exemption in tax and registration. This amount will be sent directly to the beneficiary’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This incentive will be available only to those people in whose name the old vehicle was registered.

According to a report in Economic Times, the Delhi government will provide this assistance for scrapping BS-IV or older vehicles and purchasing a new electric vehicle. If a person scraps his Delhi-registered old vehicle at an authorized center and buys a new electric vehicle within six months of receiving the replacement certificate, he will be eligible to get government assistance as per the new policy.

Who will get incentive and how much

The government has fixed different incentive amounts for different vehicles-

  • Electric Two-Wheeler: You will get an incentive of ₹ 10,000 on scrapping an old petrol scooter or bike and buying a new e-bike.
  • Electric Three-Wheeler: Those purchasing L5M category three-wheelers will be given relief of up to ₹ 25,000.
  • Electric Car: You can get a discount or incentive of up to ₹ 1 lakh on purchasing an electric car priced up to ₹ 15 lakh. However, this offer will be available only to the first 1 lakh applicants.

Exemption in road tax and registration

Apart from cash incentives, the government is also preparing to take steps to reduce the upfront cost of adopting electric vehicles. For this, the government can give 100% exemption in road tax and registration fees to all electric vehicles registered in Delhi till 31 March 2030. The government will completely waive road tax and registration on cars worth up to ₹30 lakh.
