With proper maintenance, smart riding and small tips, your bike will not only beat the heat but will also perform perfectly for a long time. If you follow these tips, the engine temperature can be reduced by 10-15 degrees. Now let us know the 5 most effective methods which every biker should adopt.
1. Regular checkup of coolant and engine oil
Most bikes above 150cc are liquid cooled. Check coolant before heating starts. If the level is low then add original coolant only, never add water or cheap coolant. Get the coolant flushed every 5000 km. Engine oil also thins quickly in summer.
Use 10W-40 or 15W-50 full synthetic oil which remains stable even at high temperatures. Get oil changed every 3000-4000 km. If the bike is air-cooled (like Bullet or Classic 350) then always keep the oil level at the higher limit. Both these things keep the engine cool from inside and reduce the risk of overheating by 70%.
2. Keep the radiator and fins clean
A layer of dust accumulates on the radiator which does not allow air to enter. Clean the radiator fins every 15 days with a soft brush or pressure washer (not very strong). In air-cooled bikes, grease and dust also accumulate on the engine fins, keep them clean. If the radiator fan is not working, consult a mechanic immediately. Sometimes the fan motor or thermostat gets damaged due to which the engine becomes 20-30 degrees hotter. A clean radiator keeps the bike 10-12 degrees extra cool.
3. Correct parking and use of cover
The engine of a bike parked in the sun heats up to 70-80 degrees. Always park in a shady area or parking shed. If there is no shade at home then definitely install a bike cover which is UV protected. After removing the cover, let the engine run at idle for 5-10 minutes so that the heat gets released. Avoid idling for long periods in traffic. If you have to wait at the signal for more than 1 minute, turn off the engine. These small habits protect the engine from internal heat.
4. Tire pressure, brake and chain care
Tire pressure increases by 3-4 PSI in summer. Check the pressure in cold tires every weekday morning. Correct pressure reduces rolling resistance and does not put any burden on the engine. If brake pads are worn, they generate heat due to excess friction. Lubricate the chain every 500 km, tight chain makes the engine work harder. Use silicone spray or dry lubricant that works even in heat.
5. Smart riding and speed control
Air flow is best at a speed of 80-90 km/hr. At speeds of 100+ the engine runs at higher RPM and gets hotter. Maintain a speed of 40-50 km in 4-5 gear in traffic. On long rides, take 5-10 minute breaks every 50-60 km, let the engine cool down. If the bike has a fairing, keep the air scoops at the bottom clean. Some riders install extra oil cooler or cooling fan kit, this is also a good option.
By following these 5 points, your bike will remain cool even in summer season. Just 15-20 minutes of maintenance can increase the life of your bike by 2-3 years. In summer, take care of your hydration along with your bike. Always wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle and do not let the pillion sit without a helmet.
