The latest edition will see the continued implementation of the Impact Player rule, introduced by IPL’s governing body in 2023. The rule allows every team to make one substitution change at any given point during either innings.
Ever since its introduction, many players, including Rohit Sharma, MI captain Hardik Pandya, and, most recently, DC captain Axar Patel, have openly opposed the rule, calling for its discontinuation due to the potential negative impact it could have on the development of all-rounders in the country.

Similar sentiments were shared at the customary pre-season captain’s meeting held at the BCCI headquarters on March 25, where a majority of the ten IPL captains urged the BCCI to do away with the rule. It remains to be seen if the suggestions are taken seriously and implemented, and players will hope that the pre-IPL 2023 format is introduced once again.
The BCCI has made it clear that the rule will remain in effect during the 2025-27 seasons, with a review meeting to be held after that to decide on 2028.

The rule, introduced in 2023, allows teams to make one substitution change per match in either innings. For example, a team bowling first can bring in a specialist batter during its second innings and vice versa. The rule has also been used to bring in an extra batter when teams suffer a batting collapse.

The rule will be in effect at least until the 2027 season, with the governing body set to take a decision on its continuation after that.
