In a country like India where following traffic rules is challenging, dashcam enhances safety and makes driving responsible. It is easy to apply it yourself, you just need to know the right way. Proper installation hides wires, keeps the camera stable and doesn’t drain the battery. Let us know how to install the dashcam.
prepare necessary items
First of all you have to collect the necessary items. Dashcam unit, power cable (cigarette lighter or hardwire kit), mount (suction or adhesive), cable clips, plastic pry tool, alcohol wipes, and fuse taps if hardwiring. First test the dashcam at home to see whether it is working properly or not.
find the right place
The most important step is to choose the right location. Place the front dashcam on the windshield, just behind or near the rearview mirror. This provides a complete view of the road and does not block the driving vision. This should be away from the airbag or sensor area. If there is a rear camera, place it on the rear windshield. While choosing a place, start the car and check the camera angle.
clean up
Clean the windshield thoroughly. Remove dust, grease, or oil with alcohol to ensure proper adhesion of the mount. Use static film or double-sided tape before applying adhesive mount. Press the mount and hold for 1-2 minutes. Mounts with suction cups can loosen in heat, so adhesive is better.
do wiring work
The easiest way is to take power from the cigarette lighter socket. Tuck the cable under the headliner (roof lining) from the edge of the windshield. Hide the wires by opening them slightly with a plastic tool. Take it down from the A-pillar (driver side pillar), but do not trap the wire in the airbag area, otherwise it may cause an accident. Run the cable under the dashboard or through the glove box.
Hardwiring for a professional look
Find the car’s fuse box. Usually it is under the dashboard or in the engine bay. Identify the ACC fuse (power when ignition is on) and Constant fuse (always power) with a multimeter or test light. Using fuse taps, connect the red wire to ACC and the yellow wire to the battery. Connect the black wire to ground (metal part). Parking mode also works with this, but to avoid battery drain, apply voltage cutter.
give final touch
If there is a rear camera, move its cable back along the roof lining. Pass through the trunk or rear deck and keep clean. Fix all the wires with zip ties or clips so that they do not dangle. After installation is complete, start the car, turn on the dashcam and check the recording. Adjust the angle so that the entire road, number plate and surrounding view is clear. Check loop recording, G-sensor and parking mode settings. Also insert an SD card, so that you have records.
bonus tips
- Always follow legal rules. Recording is prohibited in some places.
- Do not keep the wire in the airbag path, it can be harmful.
- Protect from heat, mount may loosen in direct sunlight.
- If you are not confident, get it done by a professional installer.
- Regularly check whether the camera is recording properly or not.
