1. Coverage Area – Cover the entire house
The most important thing is the coverage of the router. If your house is larger than 1000-1500 square feet or has two-three storeys, then a simple router is not enough. For a small house (800-1200 sq ft): A router with 1500-2000 sq ft coverage is sufficient.
For a larger home or two storeys (1500-3000 sq ft): Choose a router or Mesh Wi-Fi system with 3000-5000 sq ft coverage.
Mesh Wi-Fi System is the best option for big houses. It consists of a main router and 2-3 smaller nodes (satellites) that provide uniform speed and signal throughout the house. No corner remains a dead zone. TP-Link Deco, Google Nest Wi-Fi or Xiaomi Mesh systems are good options.
2. Dual Band or Tri-Band- Speed and Performance
Older single band routers work only on the 2.4 GHz band, which gives low speed and becomes slow when more devices are connected. Dual Band Router: 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz band. 2.4 GHz travels farther but the speed is lower. The 5 GHz band gives faster speed but cannot cross walls easily. Good dual band routers can easily handle 100-300 Mbps speeds.
Tri-Band Router: Two 5 GHz bands + one 2.4 GHz. Speed does not drop even if there are more devices (10-20+).
If you use 50-100 Mbps or more internet speed and run multiple devices simultaneously, then go for a Dual Band or Tri-Band router. A router with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) technology is even better because it handles more devices better and also consumes less power.
3. Choose according to budget and need
- up to Rs 5000: TP-Link Archer C80, Xiaomi Mi Router 4A Gigabit or Realme Router are good. It is enough for a small-medium house.
- Rs 8000-15000: Dual/Tri-Band models from TP-Link Archer AX series (Wi-Fi 6), D-Link or Netgear. Better coverage and speed.
- Above Rs 15000: Mesh Wi-Fi System (TP-Link Deco M4/M5, Google Nest) Best for large homes and high speeds.
Make sure to check these things while buying:
- How many antennas are there (4 or 6 antennas give better coverage)
- Has a Gigabit Ethernet port (for faster wired connections)
- Easy setup (from mobile app)
- Good brand warranty (2-3 years)
Some more tips-
- Keep the router in the middle of the house and at a high place. Do not place inside walls or cupboards.
- Use the 5 GHz band for mobiles and laptops, 2.4 GHz for devices like smart TV or printer.
- If the budget is low then instead of upgrading the old router, get a new Dual Band.
Choosing the right Wi-Fi router will provide fast internet in every corner of the house. Just buy considering the coverage, Dual Band/Tri-Band and your budget. Mesh system is best for large homes, while Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 router is perfect for medium budget and needs. Now get rid of the old problem. By buying a good router, enjoy internet without any interruption in your entire house.
