IPL 2026: CSK without Dhoni isn’t a phase, it’s a test the Men in Yellow can’t delay anymore

There is a particular kind of silence that trails MS Dhoni’s imminent absence from the opening stretch of Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2026 campaign.

Not the loud, performative kind that surrounds superstars, but something subtler, almost disorienting, as if a familiar rhythm has been briefly interrupted. For nearly two decades, CSK has been built around that rhythm.

Within that, Sanju Samson’s role is better understood as reinforcement than succession. His arrival from Rajasthan Royals adds experience and flexibility, particularly as a wicketkeeping option, but not a parallel chain of command. He becomes part of the structure around Gaikwad — a senior cricketer accustomed to responsibility, rather than its primary carrier here.

The emotional undercurrent, though, is harder to file away under structure and roles. Dhoni’s numbers remain staggering: 278 IPL matches, the most by any player; 248 appearances for CSK; 4,865 runs; five titles. But beyond numbers lies something less tangible and more enduring — a way of being that seeped into the franchise itself.

The IPL, however, has a way of accelerating inevitabilities. What feels gradual in memory often arrives suddenly in experience. If this does turn out to be Dhoni’s final season, his early absence may serve as both foreshadowing and filter. It strips away sentiment, if only briefly, and asks a harder question: what remains when the figure at the centre steps aside?
