The incident occured in the last over of the Gujarat Titans’ batting innings when the bowler in this instance, Arshdeep Singh bowled a slow bouncer to Rahul Tewatia.
Tewatia, who tried to ramp it beyond short third man, failed to connect with the shot and the ball fell straight into the hands of the Vyshak Vijaykumar at short third man. But Tewatia was given not out, and the umpires signalled a free hit.
The reason for this decision lies in the rule book which states that a bowler is not allowed to bowl more than two bouncers in an over, and if a bowler does, then a no-ball will be called.
The delivery which got Tewatia out was Arshdeep’s third bouncer of the over, leading to the decision. Arshdeep Singh looked far from his best in today’s match, bowling a record 11 deliveries in the last over, the joint highest number of deliveries bowled in the 20th over in an IPL match. Arshdeep’s bowling teammates, however, had a good game as they restricted Gujarat Titans to 162/6 in 20 overs.
