A massive fire broke out in a four-storey residential building in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar at around 3:47 am on Sunday. Preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was AC blast. So far 9 people have died in this accident and 7 to 8 people have suffered serious burns. 14 fire tenders reached the spot and 10-15 people were rescued. The death toll may increase further. This incident once again reminds us how dangerous home ACs can be if they are not maintained properly.

Let us know why and how the AC explodes.

Main causes of AC blast

Gas Leakage: AC contains refrigerant gas (like R-410A or R-32). If there is a leak in the pipeline and the gas comes out and comes in contact with a small spark or gas, an explosion can occur.

Compressor failure: Compressor is the heart of AC. Overheating occurs in an old or damaged compressor. Excessive heat increases the pressure of the gas and can lead to explosion.

Poor Maintenance: Many people do not get AC serviced for years. Dust, dirty filters and blocked pipes cause overloading. This problem increases due to continuous walking in summer.

Electricity problem: Voltage fluctuations or incorrect wiring can cause a short circuit, which ignites the gas.

bad installation: Installing AC at the wrong place or not having proper connection of the pipeline also creates a big danger.

How to avoid AC blast?

  • Get professional servicing of AC every 6 months.
  • Always use AC and stabilizer of a good company.
  • Do not install the AC in direct sunlight or in a closed area.
  • If there is suspicion of gas leak, shut it off immediately and call a technician.
  • Consider replacing old AC (more than 10 years old).

This incident in Vivek Vihar is a warning that small carelessness can turn into a big accident. AC is our source of comfort, but without proper care it can also become fatal.

If you have AC in your house then get its condition checked today itself. With regular maintenance and caution, we can not only save our lives but also keep our entire family safe.
