Fix your car’s AC at home using these 5 methods

Car AC Repair: While driving a car in summer, if hot or normal air is coming from the AC instead of cold air, then the journey becomes very painful. Many times people run straight to the mechanic and end up incurring unnecessary expenses. Whereas some small problems can be easily fixed at home.

If your car AC is not providing cooling then do not panic. By performing proper checks and following some basic steps, your AC will be performing like new again. In most cases, lack of refrigerant, dirty filter or dirt in the condenser are the main reasons. If you solve these problems in time, you can avoid expensive repairs and the life of the AC will also increase. Let us know those 5 important tips, which can make the car AC like new.

1. Check cabin air filter

The most common problem with car AC is a dirty or clogged cabin air filter. This filter is placed behind the dashboard or inside the glove box. If it is filled with dust, the air flow stops and the cooling effect is reduced. Take out the filter and check, if it is black or clogged, install a new filter. This work is done in 10-15 minutes and a new filter is available for Rs 400-600. Make a habit of changing the filter regularly every 10 to 15 thousand kilometers.

2. Clean the condenser

The condenser is installed near the radiator at the front of the car. Dust, insects and dirt get accumulated in it due to which heat cannot be discharged and the AC does not cool. When the engine is cool, carefully clean the condenser with a soft brush or pressure washer (do not apply too much pressure). After cleaning, the performance of the AC improves immediately. If the condenser is damaged, get it replaced.

3. Get the refrigerant (gas) checked and recharged

The biggest problem of cooling is due to less gas in AC. If cold air does not come even after doing the above work, then get the refrigerant level checked with a pressure gauge. Most of the service centers do gas recharge and leakage check for Rs 2 to 3 thousand. Keep in mind, sometimes there are small leaks in old vehicles which need to be repaired. By filling the right amount of gas, the AC starts cooling like new.

4. Check AC components and fuse

Sometimes the problem occurs due to damage to the blower motor, relay or fuse. Check the AC related fuse in the fuse box and if it is burnt then replace it. Also, run the AC on high and low speed to see whether the blower is working properly or not. If it is a computer controlled car, then the error code can also be checked with the OBD scanner.

5. Regular Maintenance and Preventive Care

To keep the AC good for a long time, run it on high speed for a few minutes every week, especially in winter. Keep in the shade while parking, so that the heat of the sun does not put pressure on the gas. Use good quality cabin filter and get servicing done on time. By doing these small things, your car’s AC will continue to provide cool air throughout the season.

Summary: By doing these five things, in most cases the AC problem gets eliminated and you do not need expensive repairs. If problem persists, contact a professional mechanic. With proper care your AC can always remain perfect. Your expenses may increase due to carelessness.
