Which is better in extreme heat: Cooler or AC? Which is good for health, which saves electricity?

The heat in India has now become more intense and dangerous than ever before. These days the temperature in many cities is reaching 45-50 degrees Celsius. Keeping the house cool in such extreme heat (heatwave) has become very important for health. But the question is whether cooler or AC is better?

Both provide cooling, but there is a lot of difference between the two in terms of health, electricity bill and comfort. According to doctors and experts, the right choice depends on the season, your health and budget.

Benefits of cooler

Maintains moisture: Coolers provide cooling by evaporation of water, which maintains moisture in the air. This does not dry the throat, skin and eyes.

Cheap and low power consumption: The cooler consumes much less electricity than the AC.

Fresh air: With good ventilation the cooler brings outside air in.

Coolers are more comfortable in areas with dry air (like Delhi, Rajasthan, North India).

Disadvantages of cooler

  1. Fungus and bacteria can increase due to excess moisture.
  2. Do not work in humid weather.
  3. If not cleaned, respiratory diseases can increase.

Benefits of AC

Rapid cooling and moisture reduction: Along with cooling the air, AC also reduces humidity. This reduces the risk of heat stroke, dehydration and fatigue.

Better for the sick and weak: AC is considered safer for the elderly, children, heart patients and people with diabetes.

Dust and allergy control: ACs with good filters keep the air clean.

Disadvantages of AC

  1. The air becomes very dry, which can cause sore throat, cough and skin problems.
  2. Being too cold (18-20°C) can cause sudden shock to the body.
  3. Electricity bill is very high.

doctors advice

  • Keep AC at 24-26°C. Do not operate at very low temperatures.
  • Clean both AC and cooler regularly.
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Use AC carefully while sleeping at night.

AC is generally considered safer for health during a heatwave, especially when the temperature is above 42°C. But in dry weather and for families with low budget, cooler is a good option.

The most important thing- Be it a cooler or an AC, regular cleaning and proper use of both is very important. To avoid heat, do not depend only on cooling devices, but also give priority to hydration and caution.
