A vessel was hit by a projectile off the coast of Oman following the passage of several tankers that used a route backed by the United Nations on Thursday, British military said.

The report of a strike came hours after Iran threatened vessels to stop using the route through the strait without Tehran’s permission. The vessel that was attacked was not part of the evacuation effort, said Arsenio Dominguez, the UN agency’s secretary-general.
A US official told The Associated Press that the vessel was hit by an Iranian drone.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive situation, said the merchant vessel Ever Lovely was attacked by a drone being flown by the Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

US-Iran deal latest news: Middlemen offer Iranian oil to Indian refiners after US waiver, report says
Several middlemen have offered Indian refiners discounted Iranian oil as Tehran looks to expedite sales after Washington’s temporary sanctions waiver, Indian refining sources told Reuters.
On Monday, the United States waived sanctions on Iran for 60 days after the first talks under a nascent peace deal, opening a narrow window for renewed energy trade.
The approaches to Indian refiners have come directly from the National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) and through intermediaries, the sources quoted by Reuters said, adding that they have been allocated oil by the Iranian state producer.
“Apart from NIOC, several traders are contacting us for the sale of Iranian oil. But my priority is to give a chance to NIOC,” said one of the refining sources. The sources declined to be named because the discussions are confidential.
NIOC is telling Indian buyers that Iranian crude would be $3 to $4 a barrel cheaper than similar regional grades on a landed basis, they said.
The traders approaching refiners are mainly from small and mid-sized trading companies based in Singapore and Dubai, the sources said, declining to name them.

US-Iran deal latest news: Gaza’s only prosthetic eye clinic reopens to treat war’s wounded
Gaza’s only prosthetic eye clinic has reopened for the first time in nearly three years. Hundreds of people have signed up for treatment.
Most prosthetic eyes brought into Gaza since October 7 were brought by visiting medical teams. Now supplies are running out.
Yousef, 13, lost his eye in an Israeli attack. Last year, an air strike hit his family’s tent as they slept, killing his father and brother.
His mother, Heba, has been bringing him to this prosthetic eye clinic since it reopened a month ago.
“Before that, he had a small round plastic piece fitted in his eye socket,” Heba Rayan told Al Jazeera.
“Each day I would clean it for him, and every time I did, it was painful to look at. I kept thinking, Oh God, I wish he had a proper prosthetic eye instead of this plastic piece.
“The prosthetic eye has since made a tremendous difference. It is far better in every way – more natural in appearance, more beautiful, and it has restored his confidence.”
Since October 2023, only 140 prosthetic eyes have been allowed into Gaza.
“Some of the available sizes did not meet the patients’ needs, and the colours were not always a good match. In some cases, the ocular centring was slightly off,” Sabri Hajaj, a prosthetic eye specialist, told Al Jazeera.
“In others, post-surgical complications made it impossible to fit a prosthetic eye at all.”
Mustafa al-Huwaiti says he hasn’t been able to find a prosthetic at the clinic.
“When I came in for the fitting, they couldn’t find a suitable size or colour, so I wasn’t able to get the prosthetic and will remain as I am for now,” he told Al Jazeera.
For many people like Mustafa, finding a suitable match will likely only happen when more medical aid is allowed to enter.

US-Iran deal latest news: Attack on ship in Hormuz Strait ‘unprovoked, unjustifiable,’ says Singapore port authority
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore reacted after an unknown projectile hit the Singapore-flagged Ever Lovely in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday.
“The vessel has since completed its transit through the Strait of Hormuz and is proceeding on its voyage,” the statement noted, adding that all 21 crew members are safe.
The authority expressed deep concern over the incident, “which was unprovoked, unjustifiable, and a breach of international law”.
“All actions affecting international shipping must fully comply with international law, in particular the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and not endanger the safety of seafarers and ships at sea,” the statement concluded.

US-Iran deal latest news: UN says Iran nuclear pledge needs ‘very strong’ verification
The UN’s nuclear chief said Friday that Iran’s pledge not to build a nuclear weapon would need “very strong” verification, as the United States and the Islamic Republic negotiate a permanent settlement to end their war.
Iran’s nuclear programme is a key sticking point in talks to end the Middle East war, which began in late February with a massive US-Israeli campaign of strikes.
Iran and the US last week signed a preliminary deal to end the conflict, embarking on negotiations expected to address a host of disputes, including the nuclear programme.
But there has been contrasting information from Tehran and Washington on whether UN inspectors will have access to Iranian nuclear facilities.
“I think the objective of this agreement is to ensure that there is no development of nuclear weapons in Iran. The government of Iran has declared quite clearly that this is not their intention,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Grossi said Friday.
“But of course, intentions are not enough. We have to have a very strong verification system in place… as soon as is practicable,” he added.
Grossi said the UN’s nuclear watchdog had so far “barely initiated” talks with Iran following the agreement with the United States.

On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron said that France and Italy “want to launch a coalition for the post-UNIFIL arrangement, obviously in coordination with the European Union and the United Nations, to strengthen Lebanon’s sovereignty and that of its armed forces” and prevent its territory from being “a foothold for regional escalation”.

US-Iran deal latest news: Taiwan ship operator says vessel hit in Hormuz ‘unharmed’
Taiwanese shipping operator Evergreen Marine Corp said Friday one of its container ships was hit by an “unidentified object” in the Strait of Hormuz, but the crew, vessel and cargo were “unharmed”.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a marine monitoring agency, previously said a vessel had been hit by a projectile in the strait on Thursday, with US media outlets reporting that Iran had fired at a container ship.
The Iranian agency that claims to regulate traffic there issued a warning after the incident, while the UN suspended efforts to evacuate trapped mariners.
The incident came as the United States and Iran try to forge a final agreement after signing a memorandum of understanding to end their conflict that started in late February.
