Handed a debut in the second T20I between India and England in Manchester, Sooryavanshi came out to open the Indian innings with Abhishek Sharma after skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first at the toss.
England threw its pacers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue at the big-scoring pair, with the bounce and swing on offer forcing the Indian duo to err on the side of caution.
Sooryavanshi faced his first ball in the second innings with Tongue beating him for pace outside off, with eager Indian fans hoping to see the teenager pick boundaries with his eyes closed.
His first six came off his Rajasthan Royals teammate Archer, as he swept the ball fine to get the ball into the stands. He got down on one knee with Archer going fuller in length, smacking the ball with the full face of the bat to get it over fine leg. Tongue, too, wasn’t spared as Sooryavanshi dispatched him beyond the ropes over deep midwicket.
His sprightly innings also gave Abhishek confidence, with the pair putting up 50 runs in the first five overs.
England captain Harry Brook then introduced the part-time offspin of Will Jacks to try and shake this partnership, and the move worked. Sooryavanshi stepped down the pitch to try and put some power on the ball and get it square off the wicket, but missed completely, with Jos Buttler completing a simple stumping.
