Chrome on Android finally gets a back button, reshuffling top menu

There are two types of people: those who have spent years quietly cursing Google Chrome on Android for not having a back button and those who’ve been swiping right to achieve the same thing without giving it a second thought.

There’s good news for the first type because the latest version of Chrome finally adds a back button.

The back button gets top row placement

The button is one of the updates found within Version 150 of Chrome for Android. The update is rolling out for those with automatic updates turned on and it can also be downloaded or updated manually from the Play Store.

Once the new version of Chrome is installed, the back button appears within the three-dot menu. It’s now to the left of the forward button, favorite button, download button, and reload button.

The more things change, the more other things change

Of course, this addition means there’s some adjustment.

Primarily this means that the info button is gone from that row at the top. It’s been shunted under the overflow menu in Site controls.

Also, there’s a change of language, but not function, for the Add to home screen feature. It’s now called Install and create shortcut.

Apple got there first

Anyone reading this from Appleland might be confused, because Chrome on iOS has had a back button for quite some time.

This latest change also brings how Chrome functions on Android much closer to how it does on the desktop.
