India’s young T20I side, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, endured a disappointing tour of Ireland before suffering another series loss in England, prompting the board to take stock of the team’s recent performances.
“The team is going through a bad phase, so once this tour is over, we will definitely have a review meeting to understand what is going wrong,” said Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the BCCI.
The review is expected to involve captain Shreyas and head coach Gautam Gambhir, with the board looking to assess the reasons behind India’s struggles in the format and chart a way forward ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
While the BCCI has publicly backed the current leadership group since the change in captaincy earlier this year, the back-to-back overseas series defeats have left the board concerned. India’s performances with both bat and ball have come under scrutiny, with the team failing to build momentum in either Ireland or England.
The review is likely to cover team selection, tactical approach and execution in overseas conditions, as well as the roadmap leading into the World Cup.
Following the heavy defeat in Bristol, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate admitted that the players needed to develop the right mindset to succeed in overseas conditions, while insisting that the responsibility ultimately lay with the squad to reverse the slide.
With India set to enter a crucial phase of its T20 World Cup and 2028 Olympics preparations, the review meeting could shape the direction of the side over the coming months.
India A set to tour Nepal
Meanwhile, India A is set tour Nepal for three T20Is from December 9-13, marking another significant step in the growing cricketing ties between the two neighbours.
As reported first by Sportstar, the series is part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral engagement through the sport.
The BCCI and the Cricket Association of Nepal have enjoyed a close working relationship in recent years. Ahead of last year’s T20 World Cup Qualifier, Nepal’s men’s team trained at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, with the initiative backed by the Indian government as part of efforts to deepen sporting and youth exchanges between the two countries.
India A vs Nepal series dates:
- December 9 – 1st T20
- December 11 – 2nd T20
- December 13 – 3rd T20
