Morkel played one Test, 58 ODIs and 50 T20Is for South Africa in an international career which spanned from 2004 to 2015. He registered 4248 runs in 319 T20s while also picking up 248 wickets along the way.
“It is an incredible honour to be appointed Head Coach of the Joburg Super Kings. From wearing the Super Kings jersey as a player to now leading one of its franchises as Head Coach, this journey is truly special. I look forward to building on the strong foundations we’ve created together and helping this group achieve its full potential,” Morkel said in a satement.

Morkel is a familiar face within the Super Kings canopy, having been a memorable part of the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings. He was also part of Joburg backroom since the franchise’s inception.
He has also been a specialist T20 consultant with the South African men’s national side and the Namibian men’s team as well.
He replaces Stephen Fleming, who stepped down from the stewardship of the Super Kings group and has been named as England men’s Test team’s new head coach following compatriot Brendon McCullum’s sacking.
“Albie Morkel has been an invaluable member of our coaching group over the years. He understands what the Super Kings stand for, has built strong relationships with our players and staff, and has played an important role behind the scenes in player development. We are excited to see him take on this new role and lead the team into the next chapter,” Rupa Gurunath, owner of the Joburg Super Kings said in a statement announcing his elevation.
The fifth edition of SA20 starts on January 17, 2027 with the Super Kings playing their first game on January 18.
