Apple could introduce its first camera-equipped AirPods later this year, although the company still appears to be developing a more advanced version for 2027. The new model would support Visual Intelligence features by using built-in cameras to understand objects and surroundings.
Apple has reportedly developed two separate versions under the internal code names B790 and B798. Earlier reports focused mainly on B798, which Apple originally planned to release in 2026 before moving the launch to 2027.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the B790 version has progressed further and already appears inside iOS 27 code. Apple has also listed the device on its internal product roadmap for a possible launch before the end of this year.
Developer Sam Henri Gold previously found references to B790 in the iOS 27 beta 2 code, which adds further support to the possibility of an earlier release. Apple often develops competing versions of the same product before deciding which model reaches customers.
Previous reports suggest the camera-equipped AirPods will use longer stems than AirPods Pro to create enough room for the camera hardware. The earbuds could also include an LED that activates when they send data to Apple’s cloud services.
Apple has not confirmed the product, and the differences between B790 and B798 remain unclear. However, the first camera-equipped AirPods could arrive as early as September.
