Australia has dropped opener Jake Weatherald and added Matthew Renshaw to its squad for the second Test against Bangladesh after its shock loss in the opening Test in Darwin.

Weatherald produced scores of 23 and 0 as Australia succumed to a shock nine-wicket defeat. His previous five Tests in the Ashes produced 201 runs in five matches at an average of 22.33.

Renshaw, his replacement, played the last of his 14 Tests against India in Delhi in 2023. He has scored 645 runs at an average of 29.31 with a high-score of 184 against Pakistan.

Weatherald is the only player to lose his spot from that surprise defeat. However, there will be pressure on Marnus Labuschagne — who has gone three years without an international ton — and Beau Webster, both of whom struggled in that Test as well.

Josh Inglis is the spare batter in the 13-man squad

Australia also faces a question about the composition of its bowling attack. Captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon played the first Test, but it could be tempted to bring in Scott Boland for one of Hazlewood and Lyon for the next outing.
