Former England Test captain Ben Stokes is set to make his long-awaited return to the Big Bash League after signing a one-year deal with the Adelaide Strikers for BBL-16.
Stokes, who recently stepped away from international cricket and relinquished the England Test captaincy, will feature in the Australian franchise competition this winter. The move marks his first BBL appearance in 12 years, having last played in the tournament for the Melbourne Renegades during the 2014-15 season.
The all-rounder’s decision to return to the BBL comes after a dramatic end to his England career. Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket and decision to step down as Test captain during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in June.
The announcement came during the afternoon session on the fourth day of the series decider, while Stokes was bowling. He responded to the extraordinary moment on the field by taking a wicket with the very next delivery.
Stokes had returned to England’s XI for the third Test after being left out of the second match against New Zealand following an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub.
Now, the 34-year-old will turn his attention to franchise cricket and a fresh chapter in Australia.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL-16,” Stokes said.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came up to join the Strikers it was one I couldn’t pass up.”
Stokes also highlighted the prospect of playing at Adelaide Oval and said he was looking forward to contributing to what he described as an exciting Strikers squad.
His arrival gives Adelaide a high-profile international all-rounder and brings one of English cricket’s biggest names back to the Big Bash stage after more than a decade.
