How can India qualify for WTC Final? The six-win target after Sri Lanka draw

India’s path to the World Test Championship final has become considerably more demanding after the drawn second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The draw gave India 16 points from the Sri Lanka assignment instead of the maximum 24, leaving it fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 51.52%. India has seven Tests remaining in the cycle, with two Tests away against New Zealand followed by a five-Test home series against Australia.

To keep its qualification hopes firmly in its own hands, India will need a strong finish to the campaign. A clean sweep of all seven remaining Tests would take India to 70.37% PCT. Winning six of the seven would put it close to 64.8%, although its qualification would then depend on how the other contenders perform.

There is some historical context to the numbers. The PCTs of teams that reached the previous three WTC finals show that the eventual cut-off can vary considerably depending on how the rest of the cycle unfolds. New Zealand reached the final against India at 70%, while India finished that cycle at 72.2%. In the following cycle, Australia reached the final at 66.67%, with India finishing at 58.8%. South Africa topped the standings at 69.44% in the most recent cycle, while Australia qualified with 67.54%.

Those figures suggest that a PCT in the high 60s can be enough to reach the final, but there is no fixed qualification mark. South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, the three teams currently best placed in the qualification race, will also play series against each other this year. The results of those contests could determine the eventual qualification mark, making it difficult to pinpoint a fixed PCT that India must reach. That makes India’s five-Test series against Australia particularly significant. Every win for India would not only improve its own PCT but also deny Australia points in the same race.

There is, however, a scenario in which India could still finish outside the final despite a strong run. If it loses both Tests in New Zealand but sweeps Australia 5-0 at home, India would finish on 59.26% PCT. That would leave its qualification hopes heavily dependent on results involving the other teams.

For India, therefore, the equation is straightforward. The more Tests it wins from here, the greater its chances of reaching the WTC final.
