A disturbing video showing men stealing earrings from the bodies of flood victims in Nepal has sparked widespread outrage on social media, prompting swift action by Nepal Police.
The 41-second video, which went viral online, shows at least two men dragging the body of a woman believed to have died in the devastating floods. The men are seen pulling the body using wooden planks and by her hair before removing gold earrings from both her ears and placing them aside.
Several men and women can be seen standing nearby, with some recording the incident on their mobile phones. The footage triggered widespread condemnation, with social media users expressing outrage over the looting of the dead.
Nepal Police said in a post on X that the individuals involved in stealing earrings from the body of the deceased had been taken into custody. It also shared a portion of the video.
The incident comes amid one of Nepal’s deadliest flood disasters in years. The devastating flash floods in Nepal and Tibet have killed nearly 400 people, while 1,468 others remain missing on both sides of the border.
The disaster has also left hundreds stranded, including Indians. India is racing to trace 290 nationals who remain unaccounted for as rescue teams struggle to reach affected areas amid destroyed roads, washed-away bridges and massive piles of mud and debris.
Authorities are also closely monitoring a newly formed barrier lake, which is rapidly filling, raising fears of another devastating surge downstream.
