Photos: Clouds part and make way for deep lunar eclipse

The sky forecast was in question all week: Would it be too cloudy to see the almost total lunar eclipse? The answer turned out to be no.

Patient skywatchers around the DC area who stayed up late saw the clouds break up just enough — and just in time — to witness the peak of Thursday night’s deep lunar eclipse.

At mid-eclipse, at 12:13 a.m. Friday, Earth’s shadow covered about 95 percent of the Moon’s disc, which transformed from gleaming yellow to a subtle copper tone.

The moon briefly came out of the clouds just enough to see the #lunareclipse fairly clearly, but without a clear sky I really couldn’t see any blood color. Still, it was pretty cool, and the clouds gave it a few different looks. #DC #cwshare @capitalweather.com
