Vijay Shankar has been announced as an overseas player for Dublin Guardians in the upcoming European T20 Premier League, allowing him to play under the captaincy of his long-time teammate R. Ashwin.
This is Shankar’s second franchise stint in quick succession, after he represented the Kandy Royals in the Lanka Premier League. His stint with the Royals yielded 150 runs at a strike-rate of 145.63 and one wicket in nine innings playing primarily as a middle-order batter.
Aside from Ashwin, Dublin Gladiators has further links to Indian cricket. Rahul Dravid is a co-owner of the franchise, while it will be coached by former India batting coach and current Rajasthan Royals support staff member Vikram Rathour.
New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell, USA internationals Harmeet Singh and Sanjay Krishnamurthi, English batter James Vince will also be part of the Guardians’ overseas roster.
The ETPL is Europe’s first ICC-sanctioned multi-country franchise T20 league, and features teams from Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It will take place from August 26 to September 20 in Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.
