More than 10% posts vacant in Delhi Police, says Minister

Over 10% of the total number of posts in Delhi Police are vacant, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Replying to a question raised by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Prakash Chik Baraik during Question Hour, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said as of November 30, the current strength of Delhi Police is 92,044 personnel, with 9,248 vacancies across ranks.

“Occurrence of vacancies is a dynamic process that depends on retirement, promotion, and resignation, and filling them is a continuous process,” the Minister said.

Mr. Rai added that vacancies are reported to recruitment agencies regularly and appointments are made upon completion of the recruitment process.

However, Mr. Rai did not respond to Mr. Baraik’s query on the duration for which these posts have remained vacant and by when they would be filled.

A Public Accounts Committee report tabled in Parliament in April 2024 had stated that Delhi Police sent several proposals to the MHA seeking over 50,000 new posts and additional units to meet growing demand.
