Actor Kritika Kamra has been receiving an overwhelming response for her latest release The Great Shamsuddin Family, a film that has quietly found its audience through word of mouth. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Kritika shared how she has been closely following audience reactions ever since the film’s release and why the organic appreciation has come as a pleasant surprise.

EXCLUSIVE: Kritika Kamra recalls Naseeruddin Shah holding her face and praising her after the The Great Shamsuddin Family screening; shares thoughts on Matka King, Gyaarah Gyaarah season 2, and more!“Honestly, I wake up and I scroll and I read what people are writing because it’s only been a couple of days since release,” Kritika said. “And this is a film that really relies on word of mouth. So we are kind of curious to see what people are writing. And there’s been some beautiful writing. Very new to me, to be honest.”

What stood out for her, however, was the depth of engagement beyond traditional reviews. “There’s a lot of pieces. There have been essays. There have been some big, long blogs. I’m getting a lot of personal messages. So there is a section of society that has been really writing about it,” she shared, adding that journalist Ravish Kumar writing about the film left a strong impression on her. “I’m a big fan of Ravish Kumar, so I was quite surprised.”

Kritika also revealed that the film has found appreciation within the industry. “Every day I wake up and then I get some messages that make me very happy. Especially when they come from people who you admire. I think that appreciation is most meaningful,” she said. She recalled filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan posting about the film and later speaking about her performance, while Karan Johar also gave the film a shoutout.

“One of the most special moments,” she added, “was after the screening, Naseer Sir, Naseeruddin Shah… he held my face in his hands and said some wonderful things to me. And I was at a loss for words. I didn’t know what to say.”

Despite the praise, Kritika stressed that the team had modest expectations. “No, we are such a small film. We were just hoping to even just get noticed. That’s all. We were really hoping that people would know that our film has come out and that they tune in and watch it,” she said, pointing out the crowded OTT landscape and the Dhurandhar storm. “The fact that people watch — that’s all that honestly we were expecting.”

She was quick to credit writer-director Anusha Rizvi for the film’s impact. “Most credit goes to Anusha for the writing and direction of the film. I think that is where most credit goes. But of course, this film is special to all of us. We feel like it’s an important part of our lives.”

Talking about her character Bani, a writer navigating a chaotic household, Kritika said the role resonated deeply with her own life experiences. “I’m the eldest daughter in my house. I am a single working woman who lives alone,” she explained. “There are so many women like me who actually run the house and work also… we are kind of juggling many things and balancing both sides of our lives.”

She added that Bani’s internal journey was as important as the external chaos. “There’s this internal life of Bani where there are thoughts about belonging, about the future, about where my life is going. Those are existential thoughts that we’ve all had at some point.”

One dialogue in particular struck a chord with audiences. “People who are always taking care of people also need to be cared for. They also need to be taken care of,” Kritika said, adding that this sentiment resonated strongly with viewers. “Although it’s a great privilege to be that person, it can also be tiring after a point. Sometimes you just want to be taken care of.”

Sharing screen space with seasoned actors Farida Jalal and Sheeba Chaddha was, according to Kritika, a learning experience in itself. “There is a rhythm to comedy,” she noted. “In those moments, how natural everybody was and how much in character everybody was — the way those scenes play out on screen is exactly how they were playing out in that room.”

On the film breaking away from stereotypical Muslim representation on screen, Kritika pointed to Anusha Rizvi’s lived experiences. “It comes from her real experience. She’s able to say really deep things with humour, with a very light touch,” she said. “Her writing is very nuanced. There are many layers going on — the comedy, the situational comedy, and also the inner life of Bani.”

Addressing her journey from television to OTT, Kritika admitted the conversation hasn’t quite moved on. “I don’t know how to comment on this anymore because I’m still asked this question every single time,” she said. “If I have to just talk about the transition, then maybe the transition has not happened — at least for the media.”

Reflecting on her brief stint at NIFT Delhi, Kritika said her interest in design continues to influence her approach to cinema. “I’m very interested in production design or costumes or how the camera operates. I like to dig deep into these aspects of filmmaking,” she shared.

Looking ahead, Kritika confirmed her upcoming project Matka King, though she remained guarded about details. “It’s too soon to talk about the character,” she said. “It’s a completely different world… Hopefully sometime early next year, we’ll be able to share more.”

On Gyaarah Gyaarah season 2 updates, she clarified, “I don’t have an update right now. I know that we were writing, but we’re not close to shooting.”
