In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, acclaimed actor Rajat Kapoor opened up about his approach to choosing roles and what continues to excite him as a performer, even after years of critical acclaim and a diverse body of work.

EXCLUSIVE: Rajat Kapoor reveals what makes him say yes to a role even after proving his acting range: “You always look for something you haven’t done before”Rajat said that, like most actors, he was constantly looking to challenge himself creatively. “You always want to push yourself a little and do something you haven’t done before,” he shared. He added that this often became difficult because actors frequently receive similar kinds of offers. “That’s the hard part – you keep getting the same kind of roles,” he said.

Speaking about his recent on-screen portrayals, Rajat acknowledged that he had found himself playing law enforcement characters repeatedly over the last few years. “I’ve promised myself this is my last cop role,” he said with a laugh. “For the last five or six years, I somehow got stuck doing these parts.” Recalling a light-hearted family moment, he added, “My brother keeps joking with me, asking if I’ve been promoted. This time I told him, ‘Yes, now I’m a DGP – but this is the last one.’”

In Raat Akeli Hai, Rajat Kapoor plays the role of a Director General of Police (DGP), marking yet another addition to his list of authoritative on-screen characters. The actor revealed that he was initially hesitant to take on the role and had even declined the offer. “I didn’t want to do it. I told Honey no – not another cop,” he admitted.

However, Rajat explained that director Honey Trehan eventually persuaded him to come on board. What ultimately convinced him, he said, was not the uniform but the depth of the world the film explored. He also credited writer Smita Singh for shaping the narrative. “Smita is a fabulous writer, and one of the reasons I agreed to do this was because she wrote it. The world she has created is lovely,” he said.

The actor further noted that while the cop aspect of the role itself did not excite him, the layers beyond it made the project worthwhile. He cited Khauf, also written by Smita Singh, as another example of a project that drew him in precisely because it allowed him to explore something unfamiliar. “You’re always looking for something that isn’t you, something you haven’t done before,” he explained.

Summing up his decision-making process, Rajat Kapoor said that his willingness to say yes to a script depended on whether it offered him a chance to step outside familiar territory and remain creatively engaged – even if that meant initially resisting the role before recognising its larger potential.
