India’s first Tesla Centre to be inaugurated tomorrow by Haryana Chief Minister in Gurugram
The opening also signals Tesla’s move toward a more structured retail network as it expands in India, its 50th global market. The Gurugram centre will support consultations, bookings and test drives, and will be inaugurated by the Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on November 27.
Agarwal said Tesla is using a direct-to-consumer sales model in India to adapt quickly to customer needs. He added that the company has delivered over 8 million cars globally, helping avoid 32 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.Tesla has 7,500+ supercharging stations and 75,000+ superchargers worldwide, capable of adding up to 275 km of range in 15 minutes.
In India, new superchargers are planned at One Horizon in Gurugram, followed by South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Already commissioned chargers are located at BKC Mumbai, Worldmark 3 Delhi, and the new Tesla Centre Gurugram.Agarwal also noted that many Tesla components are used in the company’s Optimus robots.
Tesla formally began sales in India this year with two imported Model Y variants priced at ₹59.89 lakh and ₹67.89 lakh, shipped from the Shanghai plant and subject to a 70% import duty.
Agarwal said the Model Y rear-wheel-drive variant offers long-term ownership savings through software updates, higher resale value and bundled assistance.
According to FADA’s Vahan data, Tesla sold 104 units across September and October, with the Model Y drawing most of the demand in the luxury EV segment.
The company enters a market currently dominated by Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which together sold 460–480 luxury EVs in October, competing alongside models such as the BMW iX1, Mercedes EQA, Volvo EC40, Kia EV6 and BYD Sealion 7.
The India rollout comes at a time when Tesla is facing softer momentum globally. It sold 497,100 units in the September quarter, up 7% year-on-year, while China sales dropped to 26,006 units in October, the lowest in three years amid rising competition.
