Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu has taken a strong public stance against what she described as the escalating “PR game” in the Hindi film industry, criticising publicity tactics that she believes prioritise manufactured narratives over genuine work. In a candid interview, the actress highlighted how promotion in the industry has evolved and voiced her preference for authenticity over strategic manipulation of public perception.

But for the last 1.5–2 years I have slowed down things, and it has also been a conscious effort. I have realised that this PR game has gone to some other level,” she remarked, pointing to aggressive publicity strategies that she believes have moved beyond merely promoting one’s own work.

According to the actor, the modern PR environment often involves efforts not just to highlight oneself but also to undermine others. “You are paying either to, I mean push yourself… you are also paying to push someone else down,” she said. Sharing her thoughts on this trend, she asked a rhetorical question about how success came to be tied to someone else’s failure: “Since when did your success depend upon someone else’s failure?”

Taapsee also touched on what she considers an increasing discrepancy between public image and real work. She criticised the creation of facades, noting that some personalities cultivate voices or personas that do not align with their actual body of work. “I am not okay with just me being there in a hit film, I also need to have a very strong voice… But that voice that you are trying to create beyond films is not matching with the work you are doing,” she said.

In describing her own approach to PR, Taapsee made it clear that she prefers to invest in personal experiences and her immediate passions rather than in publicity stunts. “I want to spend my money on myself; on my travels, and on my family. I don’t have money to plant my own articles or pay Rs 50,000 to a social media account just so they write big things about me,” she explained.

On the work front, Taapsee Pannu is set to appear in the upcoming film Gandhari.
