“Bahut sexy lag raha hai!” – Shakti Samanta’s son reveals a kiss-on-the-cheek shot of Madhubala, Ashok Kumar in Howrah Bridge was cut by the Censors : Bollywood News

One of the finest filmmakers of Indian Cinema, Shakti Samanta, celebrated his 100th birth anniversary on January 13. On this memorable occasion, Shakti Samanta’s son, Ashim Samanta, took a trip down memory lane and shared fascinating trivia from his father’s life.

“Bahut sexy lag raha hai!” – Shakti Samanta’s son reveals a kiss-on-the-cheek shot of Madhubala, Ashok Kumar in Howrah Bridge was cut by the CensorsWhile discussing the memorable film Howrah Bridge (1958) with Radio Nasha, Ashim Samanta shared a hilarious anecdote about the song ‘Yeh Kya Kar Daala Tune’. He said, “The initial portion of the song takes place in a tanga. Dad told me that it had a very beautiful shot, which was cut by the censors. I was puzzled. He explained the reason behind it. There was a shot of Madhubala wearing a scarf. Hawa chal rahi hai aur hawa ki wajah se scarf udd ke Dadamoni ke chehre ko dhak deta hai. Then Dadamoni kisses Madhubala’s cheeks while the scarf was still on his face.”

Ashim Samanta continued, “The Censors cut the shot. My father asked them, ‘Iss shot mein kya problem hai aapko?’. They said, ‘It’s too sensuous. Bahut sexy lag raha hai’!”

Ashim laughed and then added, “Dad told me that it was a very beautiful shot. Even in the explanation of the shot, one can guess that it was such a romantic shot.”

While talking about Howrah Bridge, Ashim Samanta also revealed about Madhubala’s generosity. He said, “When my father asked Madhubala about the commercials, she asked him to talk to her father. She introduced my father to her father and went away. Her father asked him about the fees. He told my dad, ‘Madhu ne bola hai abhi 1 rupaya lene ke liye. We got to know that you don’t have money, so you give Re 1 right now, but when you start shooting the film, you can give the signing amount. Give the money whenever it is possible for you.’”
