‘I like his aggression’: Henil Patel on Dale Steyn influence after U-19 World Cup five-for

Pacer Henil Patel, who starred in India’s six-wicket victory over the USA at the Under-19 World Cup, says he draws inspiration from South African fast-bowling great Dale Steyn’s aggression on the field.

Patel ripped through the American batting line-up to return figures of 5 for 16, laying the foundation for India’s comfortable win on Thursday and giving the five-time champion a perfect start to its campaign.

It was the third-best bowling performance by an Indian at any edition of the men’s U-19 World Cup, surpassed only by Kamal Passi’s 6 for 23 against Zimbabwe in 2012 and Anukul Roy’s 5 for 14 against Papua New Guinea in 2018.

“What I take from Dale Steyn is his aggression. I like it a lot,” Patel told ICC Digital in an interview.

“His bowling was so good that no batter could face him easily. He was very tough to play against.”

Three of Patel’s five wickets came during a fiery new-ball spell at Queens Sports Club that left the USA reeling at 34 for 4. The 18-year-old said the key to his success up front was a clear intent to attack the stumps.

“I go in with the mindset of getting the batter out within three or four deliveries,” Patel said. “It’s about taking early wickets. I keep the same mindset and stay calm.

“I prepare with a clear plan in training, get my body ready, and approach matches the same way.”
