In a fresh development in the certification dispute surrounding Jana Nayagan, the producers of the Vijay-starrer have withdrawn their petition before the Madras High Court, effectively allowing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to proceed with its revising committee review of the film. The matter was briefly taken up by Justice PT Asha, who permitted the producers to withdraw the plea.

Jana Nayagan censorship row: Thalapathy Vijay starrer headed back to CBFC Revising Committee after producers withdraw pleaWith this, the CBFC’s revising committee will now re-examine the film and take a final call on the category of certification, which could range from an unrestricted ‘U’ certificate to a ‘U/A’ or an ‘A’ certificate. The case has seen multiple legal turns over the past few weeks. Earlier, a single-judge bench of the High Court had directed the CBFC to grant certification to the film based on the recommendations of its examining committee. However, this order was subsequently challenged by the CBFC.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava and Justice Arul Murugan overturned the single-judge ruling, stating that the court had prematurely examined the substance of objections related to the film’s content at an interim stage. The Division Bench allowed the CBFC’s appeal, set aside the earlier order, and remitted the matter back to the single judge for reconsideration.

When the case returned to the single-judge bench following this directive, the producers chose to step back from the litigation, leading to the withdrawal of the petition.

Jana Nayagan, which is widely being described as the final film of Thalapathy Vijay before his anticipated full-time foray into politics, was originally planned for a Pongal release on January 9. The producers, KVN Productions, had approached the High Court alleging that the certification process had been unnecessarily delayed despite their compliance with the CBFC’s suggested modifications.

According to submissions made earlier, the film was submitted for certification on December 18, 2025. The examining committee later recommended a ‘UA 16+’ certificate, citing scenes involving violence, action sequences, gory visuals, and brief religious references. The committee also proposed certain cuts and alterations, which the producers stated were implemented before a revised version was resubmitted.

Despite being informed that the film would be cleared under the ‘UA 16+’ category after verification, the producers later received communication stating that the film was being referred to a revising committee under the Cinematograph Rules. This referral was reportedly triggered by a complaint concerning the depiction of religious sentiments and defence forces, a complaint that was later revealed to have originated from within the examining committee itself.

With the withdrawal of the legal challenge, the focus now shifts back to the CBFC’s revising committee, whose decision will determine the film’s certification and its path forward toward theatrical release.
