Like the citizens have the right to elect leaders, they should also have the right to fire them, says AAP MP Raghav Chadha.

“Right to recall is a mechanism that empowers the voters to de-elect a representative before the tenure ends if he/she fails to discharge his/her duty,” he adds.

If the leaders fail to meet their promises, the citizens don’t have any choice but to wait for 5 years, he says.

“There is no performance review, accountability or corrective option available,” he adds

Before the election, the leader is behind the citizens, and after the elections, the citizens are behind the leaders,” Mr. Chadha adds. 

He says that five years is too long a tenure. He adds that the right to recall is not a weapon against the politicians; it is an insurance policy for democracy.

There are provisions to impeach the President and judges, so why can’t we have one to impeach the elected candidates, he asks.

He gives examples from different countries where elected candidates were de-elected after they failed to do their duty in the right way.
