Baz Luhrmann brings EPiC: Elvis Presley in concert to IMAX with never-seen-before footage

Baz Luhrmann brings EPiC: Elvis Presley in concert to IMAX with never-seen-before footageConceived during the making of Elvis (2022), the project originated from a search for reportedly lost footage from the 1970s concert films Elvis: That’s the Way It Is and Elvis on Tour. What began as an attempt to restore fragments for a narrative feature soon expanded into a much larger discovery. The filmmakers uncovered 69 boxes containing nearly 59 hours of unseen film negatives, along with never-before-seen Super 8 footage sourced from the Graceland Archives. The material was identified by Angie Marchese, Vice President of Archives and Exhibits and Curator at Graceland.
The footage, restored over a period of more than two years, has been presented with significantly enhanced visual and sound quality. While parts of this material had previously circulated in poor-quality bootlegs, much of it had never been publicly viewed. Rare audio sources were also restored, allowing performances to be experienced in a way that had not been possible before.
Explaining the creative approach behind the film, Luhrmann said, “What if Elvis came to you in a dreamscape, almost like a cinematic poem, and sang to you and told you his story in a way in which you haven’t experienced before?” He added that one of the most significant discoveries during the process was a collection of previously unheard recordings of Elvis reflecting on his life and music. These include material from a 1970 Las Vegas show, moments from his 1972 tour, and recordings connected to the 1957 “gold jacket” performance in Hawaii.
According to Luhrmann, these findings shaped the final vision of the film, inspiring a format that allows Elvis to guide audiences through his own journey. EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert presents his story through both classic performances and contemporary musical interpretations, structured as a musical dreamscape rather than a traditional concert film.
Positioned as a fresh cinematic experience, the film invites audiences to revisit Elvis Presley’s legacy through restored imagery, sound and personal reflections, bringing his voice and presence back to the big screen in a new form.
