BCB chief Aminul Islam set to meet BCCI officials at India-Pakistan World Cup clash
Speaking to Bangladesh newspaper Pratham Alo, Islam said the invitation for the marquee match has come from the ICC and is part of a broader plan to bring key Asian stakeholders together.
“The ICC has taken a decision. The major stakeholders of the ICC are these five Asian countries and for the India-Pakistan World Cup match on the 15th, they want representatives of all five Asian countries to be present at the ground together, watch the match together and talk to one another,” Islam said.
India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan form the Asian bloc within the world body.
Asked if the meet could offer a chance to reset ties with the BCCI, Islam replied: “You can consider it as something like that.”
Relations between the two boards deteriorated after the BCCI ordered the release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from his IPL contract with Kolkata Knight Riders due to unspecified “developments all around”.
Bangladesh later refused to travel to India for its World Cup fixtures, citing security concerns. However, the ICC, led by former BCCI secretary Jay Shah, rejected the assessment after its own review, describing the threat perception as low to moderate.
With Bangladesh unwilling to shift its position despite prolonged discussions, the ICC replaced them with Scotland in the tournament.
The episode also triggered a brief diplomatic ripple, with the Pakistan government announcing a boycott of its match against India in solidarity with Bangladesh. The situation was eventually defused after the BCB and the Sri Lankan government persuaded Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to withdraw the call.
Islam said the BCB now wants formal safeguards in place going forward.
“We will also enter into an agreement. The agreement will be line by line, an MoU-type document, so that there is no uncertainty,” said Islam.
“Similar discussions (regarding preparing the MoU) with the ICC are more or less finalised,” he added.
