Tu Yaa Main actor Adarsh Gourav on being at a disadvantage vis-à-vis the star kids, “Everybody has their advantages and disadvantages”Tu Yaa Main looks like your first romantic lead. Is that right? What took an actor of your calibre so long to get here?
Yes, technically it is my first romantic lead. I just think it took some imagination and creativity. And I’m very very grateful to my director Bejoy Nambiar and Color Yellow Films’ Anand Rai sir for thinking that I could play a character as amazing and as colourful as Maruti. I had a lot of fun doing it.

How does the year look to you?
2026 looks really good. There’s a film that I’m doing that starts in March. There will be an official announcement soon. So, unfortunately I won’t be able to speak about it. But Alien Season 2 is happening as well.

How did you bag a pivotal role in Alien: Earth?
How did this happen? Just a lot of persistence, a lot of failure and then that making your resolve stronger I guess and I was just lucky one of my bigger auditions during the last three years materialized. I kept trying, kept auditioning with both my American and my London agents and then Alien was the first audition that I eventually cracked.

How did you get into your character’s mind?
Well, a lot of observation of children, a couple of channels on YouTube; one of them being HiHo Kids who were very instrumental in me understanding the physicality of children. Also a lot of live observation, observing my cousins who would just go out to the park in the evening to work out and then just sit on the bench and watch children play you know, how they would be with their parents, etc.

You got to work with quite an interesting eclectic cast Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay and Timothy Olyphant
Working with my co-actors was actually a complete treat. It was so cool to just be working with people from all over the world and then learning about their stories and their cultures and why they act and how they found acting and just how they even lead their lives…. I had a co-actor who’s from Tasmania, somebody else who’s from Ivory Coast but lives in Denmark and just to understand how different their lives are and how different all our lives are was really something else and also all of them are extremely extremely good actors, very very present, very trained actors. They have practiced their craft for a lot of years, so it’s just a lot of fun to be working with people who are so devoted to their craft.

What was the most fun part of the shooting?
For me it was the two-week schedule in Krabi because we finally went from shooting in studios in Bangkok for six months to shooting outdoors in Krabi and outdoors were beautiful, very very lush with monsoon. Actually same time around this year, last year was when we were shooting in Krabi. So, a big chunk of 2026 will also be spent on filming for Alien Season 2.

What was it like shooting for with Shanaya? She does seem to belong to a different school
It was a blast shooting with Shanaya, sir. She’s a really really selfless co-actor. And she’s very present. And we had a lot of fun shooting for the entire film together. I think we were both listening to each other very well in the scenes.

After highly acclaimed performances in The White Tiger, Superboys Of Malegaon and Alien: Earth, what are you looking for in your career?
I’m just looking at building a career, sir. I don’t have to box myself or restrict myself. I want to be able to work in any part of the world and just be part of good stories, that’s it. Work with good directors and be part of good stories

Do you feel disadvantaged vis-à-vis the star kids?
Do I find myself at a disadvantage vis-a-vis the star kids? No, not really. I feel everybody has their advantages and their disadvantages. My advantage is that life has given me a lot to experience and to understand which I guess gives me a lot of perspective. I know even though I’m just 32, I feel like I’ve seen a lot in my life; some voluntarily, some involuntarily. But it has enriched me as a person and has helped me grow a lot as a person, which helps me in my craft.

Are you satisfied with the progress you’ve made so far?
One day I feel thankful. The next day I feel an itch again of being stagnant. So, it’s a constant inner turmoil I guess that you just go through as an artist. But yes, I’m really really grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had in the past 4 or 5 years. I feel like I’ve met and worked with a lot of people I respect and look up to. And really really grateful that that’s happened.
