Boong created history at the 2026 BAFTA Awards by winning Best Children and Family Film, becoming the first-ever Indian production to secure the honour in this category. The recognition has been widely celebrated across the film industry, with several filmmakers and audiences acknowledging the milestone moment for regional Indian cinema.
The film is a 2024 Indian Manipuri-language coming-of-age drama written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi. It features performances by Gugun Kipgen, Bala Hijam, Angom Sanamatum, Vikram Kochhar, Nemetia Ngangbam, Jenny Khurai and Hamom Sadananda.
Before its BAFTA win, Boong had its world premiere at the Discovery section of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2024. The film has since garnered attention for its portrayal of childhood and community set within the cultural landscape of Manipur.
The international recognition marks a significant step for Manipuri cinema on the global stage. With appreciation coming from political leaders across party lines, the film’s achievement continues to be acknowledged as a moment of national pride.
