Meta is testing a new optional subscription service called WhatsApp Plus. It will get premium features like custom themes, new app icons, exclusive stickers and 20 chat pins, while the basic messaging and calling service of WhatsApp will remain free for all users. The company has also said that these are the first set of features and more tools can be added based on user feedback.

The main features available in WhatsApp Plus include custom themes, accent colors and 14 different app icons. With this, users can make the app unique as per their choice. You will also get exclusive stickers, new chat ringtones (about 10 initially, may change later) and more expressive message reactions. The big advantage in chat management is that in normal WhatsApp only 3 chats can be pinned but in WhatsApp Plus up to 20 chats can be pinned at the top. The company has said that these are the first set of features and more tools can be added based on user feedback.
Benefits of creativity features
The special thing is that the core functions of WhatsApp like messaging, voice and video calls, media sharing and end-to-end encryption will be completely free for everyone. No user will pay for these basic things. Meta says that the upcoming subscriptions are to unlock more productivity and creativity features in the apps while the core experience will be kept free. This subscription is different from Meta Verified which is mostly for business.
Users will soon get the option
Right now it is in the testing stage. Some Android beta testers are getting a waiting list option where they can join and receive notifications when the service becomes available. No pricing details have been given and no timeline for launch has also been given. Final features may change before launch. Separately, another subscription to remove ads from the Updates tab (formerly Status) is being worked on in Europe and the UK, but it is separate from WhatsApp Plus.
This news is interesting for Indian users because WhatsApp is most used here. Many people already wanted themes and customization. If it is launched then those who want to use the app in a personalized manner will get a good option. But basic users will not make any difference because everything will remain free. Meta earns less from ads due to the private messaging model, hence it is planning a stable income from subscription. WhatsApp Plus is a premium tier that will offer customization and extra tools. This will not affect free WhatsApp. Testing is going on and more updates may come soon.
