DoT has proposed to extend the deadline of SIM binding rule for messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram till December 2026. Under this rule, it will be necessary to link the user account to the mobile SIM, so that cyber fraud and fake accounts can be stopped.

The central government has extended the deadline for implementing SIM binding rules for WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and other messaging apps. Earlier this deadline was till the end of February 2026, but the companies asked for more time citing technical problems and it got postponed.
Now an official of DoT (Department of Telecommunications) has reported that the new deadline of this rule may be shifted to the end of December 2026. Let us know what is this SIM binding rule?
What is SIM binding rule?
This is a safety related rule. Under this, messaging apps will be required to always keep the user’s account tied to the physical SIM card installed in the mobile phone. Meaning: The app will work fully only when the registered SIM is installed and active in the phone.
The account may be affected by removing the SIM, inserting it in another phone or deactivating it.
WhatsApp Web or desktop version will automatically log out every 6 hours. Then you will have to login again through QR code.
Its main objective is to stop cyber fraud, digital arrest scam and fake accounts being run from abroad.
What did the different apps say?
- Meta (WhatsApp): The company is working closely with DoT. SIM binding on Android version is currently in beta testing. They are looking for technically practical solutions.
- Arattai (Zoho): The company said that they are solving the challenges in collaboration with DoT. Will release an update soon after receiving additional clarification. Their focus is to keep the user experience as little affected as possible.
- Signal, Telegram and Snapchat: These companies have not given any official statement on this issue.
Many apps had initially said that this rule would be difficult to implement as it would require coordination, testing and major changes with the operating systems (Android and iOS).
There are some technical obstacles from Apple’s side in iOS, which are being resolved. The government says that the rule will be implemented in different phases – first Android, then iOS.
This change may cause some inconvenience to the users, but is necessary to prevent fraud. The final order is about to be issued. After the rules are fully implemented, SIM checking will be more strict while using services like WhatsApp.
