China CCTV Camera: The central government has banned internet-connected Chinese CCTV cameras without certification. Chinese electronics equipment is viewed with suspicion all over the world. CCTV cameras also come under the category of sensitive products.

Taking advantage of the weaknesses of these cameras, criminals have stolen live video feeds and sold them on the dark web.
New Delhi. From April 1, the Indian government has banned the sale of Chinese-origin and internet-connected CCTV cameras which do not have standard testing and quality certification. This decision of the government has been taken mainly to prevent the dangers of espionage and to keep the data of Indian citizens safe. This will have a direct impact on big Chinese companies like Hikvision and Dahua, which currently hold a large share of the Indian market. This decision of the government raises the question that how safe are the CCTV cameras coming from China?
Chinese electronics equipment is viewed with suspicion all over the world. CCTV cameras also come under the category of sensitive products. This is the reason why CCTV cameras of Chinese companies HackVision and Dahua have been banned in the premises of the federal government, army and government agencies in America since 2019. In 2022, America completely banned the import, sale and use of new CCTV from China. Chinese CCTV cameras are banned in sensitive and national security institutions in Britain. Hikvision is banned in Canada in 2025.
Why should Chinese CCTV become a threat?
According to experts, these cameras are not only weak in terms of cyber security, but are also a big threat to the privacy of the country. They are very weak in terms of cyber security. Backdoors, default passwords and unpatched bugs are frequently found in cameras of Chinese origin. By taking advantage of these flaws, hackers easily gain remote access to the device.
Such flaws have been seen in Hikvision and Dahua cameras, due to which criminals have stolen the live video feed and sold it on the dark web. These companies often use weak firmware and encryption, hence Chinese cameras are among the most hacked products in the category of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Threat to national security and data privacy
The biggest concern is that most of the Chinese companies have direct links with the Chinese government. For example, the Chinese government has a large stake in Hikvision. Under China’s Intelligence Law, companies there are legally responsible for providing data to the government.
It has been revealed in many reports that these cameras send user data to Chinese or Chinese-controlled servers even when the cloud connection is closed. If these cameras are used on government buildings or sensitive infrastructure, the risk of espionage increases manifold. Apart from this, they can also steal personal data. Therefore, using them in your bedroom or any other such private place can put your privacy at risk.
India tightened rules
In view of all these dangers, the Government of India has implemented new rules for standardization and quality certification. Due to these rules, it has become almost impossible for Chinese brands to survive in the Indian market.
- Chipset restrictions: Certification will not be given to any product in which Chinese chipset (SoC) or firmware has been used.
- AMandatory Testing: It is now mandatory for every device to thoroughly test for Remote Access Vulnerability.
- Local Testing: It has been made mandatory for companies to maintain complete transparency in their supply chain and conduct safety testing in local labs in India.
