Vedanta plant accident opened old wounds: Why are factory boilers becoming a means of death again and again?

A very sad news has come out from Sakti district of Chhattisgarh yesterday. On the afternoon of 14 April 2026, a horrific accident occurred, which shocked everyone. This accident happened in the power plant of Vedanta Limited, where suddenly a massive explosion occurred during work and many workers lost their lives. Suddenly during work the boiler tube burst. It is said that at the time of the explosion, the temperature inside the boiler was more than 700 degrees Celsius. Due to such terrible heat and pressure, 14 laborers died on the spot.while 20 other laborers were seriously burnt. You must have read this news, but a question must have arisen in your mind that why do the boilers installed inside factories explode? Many such incidents have happened in the past also. So in such a situation can’t they be avoided? Let’s decode it.

The incidents of boiler explosions have increased significantly in the last few years in India. Boiler is a big machine, in which steam is made by boiling water. Apart from this Sakti accident, if we look back, in January 2026, 7 workers had also died in Real Ispat Plant, Baloda Bazar. Before that, similar blasts had taken place at places like Verka Milk Plant in Ludhiana and Amudan Chemicals in Maharashtra. Experts say that these accidents are not a coincidence, rather there are some big reasons behind them-

Reasons for boiler explosion

First reason: lack of water

The biggest and first reason for boiler bursting is lack of water and overheating of the machine. You can think of it like a domestic pressure cooker. If the cooker runs out of water, it turns red and starts burning and may explode. There are many iron tubes inside the boiler. When the water level falls, these tubes become so hot that the iron starts softening and bursts due to the high pressure. Often due to sensor or automatic system failure, the operator does not realize that the water has reduced. In the initial investigation of recent accidents in Kerala and many other factories in the country, it was found that the water level there had become very low.

Second reason: excessive pressure

The second main reason is excessive pressure. Every boiler has its own capacity as to how much pressure it can withstand. For this, ‘safety valves’ are installed in it, which let out the steam when the pressure increases (like the whistle of a cooker). But if these valves get damaged or get jammed, then so much steam fills inside that the boiler explodes like a bomb. In accidents like Sakti’s Vedanta plant, it has often been seen that the pressure in the tube suddenly increased and deadly leakage of hot steam started from there.

Third reason: Lack of maintenance

Not cleaning the boiler at the right time and causing rust in it is also a big negligence. If dirty or untreated water is used in the boiler, dirt gets accumulated in the tubes. This is exactly like accumulation of garbage in the veins of the body. Due to this the tubes become weak from inside and start wearing out. Keeping old machines running without repairing them is like inviting death. Experts say that “pouring water without treating is the biggest enemy of the boiler.”

Fourth reason: fault of workers

Another serious problem is the mistakes and lack of training of the workers. Many times, in order to save money, companies get boilers operated by unlicensed or unskilled people. These people do not know which button to press in case of danger or what the warning signal means. Operator error often comes up in investigation reports, which means that the person present there could not take the right decision at the right time. Even a small mistake during maintenance can blow up the entire plant.

Fifth reason: poor design of the machine

Poor design of the machine or use of inferior materials is also a reason. Some owners use cheap and poor quality iron or parts to make profits. If the safety valve or gauge (pressure measuring meter) itself is substandard, then it will not work in times of danger. Even old technology boilers do not have strong safety arrangements, which increases the possibility of accidents.

Sixth reason: shortcomings of management and system

A big problem is also the shortcomings of management and system. In the name of reducing expenses, companies remove experienced employees and hire contract workers who do not have complete knowledge of the work. Apart from this, ignoring government rules, not getting inspections done on time and corruption are also the root causes of these accidents. Two accidents in big plants like Neyveli (NLC) proved how dangerous the slightest carelessness and accumulation of ash during shutdown and startup (stopping and starting the machine) can be.

What after this accident?

This accident has once again raised big questions on industrial safety. After the deaths in this Vedanta plant of Sakti, now the safety of workers and maintenance of the plant will be investigated in depth. Experts believe that as long as companies focus only on increasing production and ignore safety rules, such accidents will continue to happen.

In the coming days, the government may bring new and strict rules for power plants and chemical factories. To prevent such incidents in future, it has become necessary to increase the use of modern security systems like automatic shut-off and sensor technology. The biggest thing is that only by taking strict action against the culprits, a strong message will be sent to other companies that the value of workers’ lives is greater than any profit.
