The full name of IP is Ingress Protection. This is an international standard, set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It tells how well a device is protected from dust and water.
IP rating usually consists of two numbers. The first digit indicates dust protection, which ranges from 0 to 6. If the rating of a device is 6, it means that it is completely dust-tight i.e. protected from dust.
The second digit indicates protection against water, which ranges from 0 to 9. The higher the number, the better the protection against water.
Now let’s talk about IP67, IP68 and IP69.
IP67 means that the device is completely protected from dust and can survive in water up to 1 meter deep for some time.
IP68 is most commonly seen in premium smartphones these days. It also provides complete dust protection, but the protection from water is even better. This phone can remain safe in water about 1.5 meters deep for about 30 minutes.
IP69 is considered the strongest rating. It can withstand not only submersion in water, but also strong pressure and hot water stream. This rating is often seen in rugged devices and industrial machines.
But one important thing is that having IP rating does not mean that your phone is completely waterproof. These tests are done in the lab with clean water. Salt water, soap, tea, coffee or frequent exposure to water can damage the phone.
Therefore, IP rating should not be considered as a guarantee of complete security, but as a security guide. While buying a new smartphone, definitely pay attention to the IP rating along with the camera and battery.
