Power Bank: Big news for those who carry power banks in flights! Keep these 10 things in mind, otherwise a blast may occur.

Recently Indigo flight was going from Hyderabad to Chandigarh. The flight landed at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in the afternoon, but when the plane was going towards the parking, a passenger reported smoke and fire coming out of his power bank. The crew members immediately extinguished the fire with fire extinguishers, but by then the cabin was filled with smoke.

After this the emergency doors were opened and all the passengers were taken out safely through inflatable slides. During this time a passenger also got minor injury.

DGCA gave important information

In view of this incident, DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) had issued an advisory in November 2025. Under this, there is a ban on charging any device from the power bank during the flight, even if it is from the power outlet of the seat. Also, power banks are allowed to be carried in hand baggage only, keeping them in overhead cabin or check-in baggage is strictly prohibited.

If you carry a power bank even in a flight, then it is important to understand that a power bank is very useful in travelling, but if the power bank is not kept properly during the flight then it can also be dangerous. In such a situation, there is a risk of fire in the lithium battery.

Keep these things in mind

1. Always keep in cabin bag- Never keep power banks in check-in luggage (hold bag). Always keep it with you in your cabin bag.
2. Do not carry damaged or swollen power banks. If the power bank is swollen, leaking or broken, do not carry it at all.
3. Use only certified and good brand power bank- Buy only BIS, CE or UL certified power banks. Use only original charging cables and accessories.
4. Do not keep too much stuff in the bag- Do not keep the power bank tightly packed in a bag or under heavy luggage.
5. Do not charge in flight- Most airlines do not allow charging phones or laptops from power banks in flight. Follow the rules. Apart from this, do not keep the power bank with coins, keys or other metal things. This may cause short circuit.
6. Check wh limit- Check the rules of your airline before flying. Most airlines allow power banks up to 100Wh. Power banks up to 27,000mAh are usually fine.
7. Do not keep in overhead bin- Do not keep the power bank in the upper compartment. Keep it near your seat or in your pocket where you can see it.
8. Remove the cable when not in use. Remove all cables and USB from the power bank when not in use.
9. Remove the power bank after charging- It is better to remove the power bank immediately as soon as the mobile is fully charged so that your phone does not get damaged due to overcharging and the power bank also does not heat up.
10. If you see any problem, please inform immediately- If the power bank gets hot, smoke comes out or there is a strange smell, immediately inform the cabin crew (flight staff).
