Ola Electric on its way to becoming a battery supplier, talks with global auto companies

Ola Electric Ltd is in discussions with several global and domestic automakers to supply lithium-ion cells and battery packs. The company is planning to supply this from its Gigafactory located in Krishnagiri. This step is important towards establishing Ola as a battery supplier by moving beyond the captive demand of its electric scooters.

The Bengaluru-based company is currently running India’s only active Gigafactory, with an installed capacity of 6 GWh. Ola, through its wholly owned subsidiary Ola Cell Technologies, has commercially deployed the 4680-format ‘Bharat Cell’ on a large scale. Ola is the second company after Tesla to achieve this feat.

What is the plan?

According to reports, these discussions are taking place at the time of expansion of Ola’s cell manufacturing operations. The company’s installed capacity is expected to increase to 12 GWh by July 2027 and 20 GWh by the end of FY28. Of the proposed 20 GWh capacity, about one-third (about 6.5 GWh) is earmarked for third-party sales, i.e. supplies to automotive OEMs. Potential customers are currently evaluating Ola’s manufacturing facility, which could lead to long-term commercial agreements.

This strategic shift could make Ola’s battery business a key supplier to India’s broader EV and energy storage market. According to the information given to investors in February 2026, the company has invested about ₹ 5,300 crore in manufacturing, battery technology, sales and R&D and a major part of the investment cycle has been completed.

This initiative of Ola is towards strengthening the domestic EV supply chain and reducing dependence on imports. The company has already launched Ola Shakti home energy storage system, whose annual sales demand could reach 5 GWh in a few years.

Ola’s share will increase in global supply chain

This step of the company will benefit not only the EV sector but also drones, robotics, energy storage and other sectors. If the agreements are successful, Ola will make a major contribution towards making India self-reliant in battery technology. This will strengthen the ‘Make in India’ initiative and increase India’s share in the global supply chain.
