M.A. Chidambaram Stadium could play host to BBL16 season-opener

The season opener of the 16th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL 2026-27) is all set to be held at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here, confirmed a TNCA source on Monday.

The match is most probably to be played in the second week of December. A five-member committee of Cricket Australia (CA) officials, which attended the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, is here to have a recce of the stadium and explore the venue further.

A CA representative refused to confirm the development, but said: “We are not able to confirm anything. We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian Government to drive the India-Australia relationship. Nothing confirmed as yet, and we are working closely with our friends in BCCI.”

It is understood that BCCI president Mithun Manhas was also in Chennai to meet the CA officials.
