Instagram users will no longer be able to use end-to-end encrypted direct messages (DMs), as the company has officially discontinued this privacy-focused feature. This decision is completely contrary to the old strategy of Meta, in which the company was talking about making encryption mandatory on all its platforms.

The company completely ended end-to-end encrypted messaging support on the platform from May 8, 2026. Users whose chats were already encrypted are being sent a notification within the app, warning them to download their important data and media files in time, because it may be difficult to recover them after the feature is turned off. What is end-to-end encryption?
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is considered the strongest shield of digital security. This is a technology in which apart from the sender and receiver of the message, no third person, even the platform itself (like Meta), can read the message.
What does it mean to remove end-to-end encryption?
Now Instagram will work on ‘standard encryption’. Removing encryption simply means that now Meta will be able to read and see your messages, photos, videos and voice notes if needed. This is similar to how Gmail works.

Instagram will use ‘standard encryption’, which protects messages between the device and the server, but does not guarantee complete privacy like end-to-end encryption, because the company has the technical ability to access the content. Why did Instagram remove end-to-end encryption? ?
Meta had earlier called encryption the ‘future communication’, but Instagram’s decision to disable it is surprising. The company has argued that very few users were activating this feature manually. However, experts believe there are two big reasons behind this.
1. Security and Law: Child protection organizations and governments were opposing it for a long time, because due to encryption, criminals and people exploiting children could not be caught.
2. AI Training: According to cyber expert Victoria Baines, companies now want data to train AI models. However, Instagram has denied using the messages for AI training.
