Ban on social media for people under 16 years of age, heavy fine will be imposed on companies

There is increasing concern around the world regarding the online safety of children. Meanwhile, Malaysia has taken a big step and decided to ban social media account registration for children below 16 years of age. The new rule has come into effect from June 1, 2026 and under this it will be mandatory for social media companies to check the age of users.

According to Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), now platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube will have to verify the age of users based on government records. If a company does not follow these rules, it can be fined up to 10 million Malaysian Ringgit (about $2.5 million).

What is the purpose?
The government says that the purpose of this step is not to keep children away from the internet or technology, but to keep them safe from harmful and inappropriate content available online. Besides, the responsibility of social media companies, parents and guardians also has to be increased so that minors can get a safe digital environment.

Under the new rule, age verification will be processed not only for new users but also for existing accounts. Social media platforms have been given six months time for this. During this time, companies will make necessary changes in their systems and will check the information of existing users.

In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in harmful content, fake information and posts increasing social tension online in Malaysia. The government is especially strict on content that creates racial or religious tension or targets the country’s constitutional institutions.

This decision of Malaysia has come at a time when many countries of the world are making new rules regarding children’s social media use. Experts believe that excessive use of social media can affect children’s mental health, studies and social behavior.

This step of Malaysia is being considered as a big effort towards strengthening the digital security of children. In the coming time, other countries can also implement similar rules, so that the protection of minors on social media platforms can be further strengthened.
