The central government has recently launched the Abhigyan app. With the help of this app, police and investigation agencies will be able to scan the fingerprints of a suspect on the spot and check his criminal record in just 35 seconds. Launched by Home Minister Amit Shah, this app has been created by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

What is Abhigyan App? Abhigyan App is a mobile application which is linked to NAFIS (National Automated Fingerprint Identification System). It contains fingerprint records of more than 1.3 crore criminals and suspects across the country.

Police officers can now stop any suspicious person on the road and take his thumb impression using a portable fingerprint scanner. As soon as the scanner is connected to the app, within 35 seconds the entire criminal record of that person like previous cases, arrests, jail records, comes on the mobile.

Features of the app

• Real-time detection: Instant identification by fingerprint.
• mobile based: No need to go to the police station.
• Two-Step Authentication: Protection from use without permission.
• Linked to NAFIS database: Records of drugs, human trafficking and other serious crimes also available.
• Strengthening field level policing.

What are the benefits?

According to the government, currently about 1.29 crore fingerprint records are available in NAFIS. Also in the system:

• Data of about 9.91 lakh narcotics criminals
• Information related to 3.65 lakh human trafficking cases
• Detailed records related to jails are also available.

The government says that this data will help in making crime investigation and policing more effective in future. Please note that this app is not for common citizens. It is available only to officers of police, CID and other security agencies. Common people cannot download it.

Abhigyan App is a big step towards making policing advanced and technically strong. Now criminals will be easily caught even on the road. The government aims to implement this system effectively in the entire country and help in controlling crime. This app is an important initiative towards Digital India and smart policing.
