Punjab Kings batter Shashank Singh denies cook’s assault allegations after FIR in Bhopal

Police have registered an FIR against Indian Premier League cricketer Shashank Singh and his retired IPS officer father in Bhopal after a cook hired by them accused the duo of holding him hostage and assaulting him, an official said.

Shashank, who plays for Punjab Kings in the IPL, denied the allegations and said the complainant, Vipendra Singh Tomar, was playing the “victim card” after being asked to leave the house following three days of service.

Based on Tomar’s complaint, a case was registered at the Ratibad police station on June 29 against Shashank and his father, Shailesh Singh, who retired as Special Director General of Police. An investigation is underway, the official said.

Speaking to PTI Videos, Additional Police Commissioner Shailendra Singh Chauhan said Tomar told investigators that he had come to work as a cook at the house of Shashank and his father, but was allegedly held hostage, abused and assaulted. Tomar also alleged that his mobile phone was snatched.

“Based on the injury marks on Tomar, the police conducted a medical examination and an FIR was registered on the basis of his complaint. The case is being investigated. We will take further action as evidence emerges,” Chauhan said.

Shashank, however, denied the allegations.

“Nothing of this sort has happened,” he said, referring to the complaint.

The cricketer said Tomar had come to their house on the evening of June 25 and left on the morning of June 28.

“So how can it be said that he was held hostage?” Shashank said.

According to Shashank, Tomar was hired as a cook through his father’s friend. He said Tomar had claimed that he knew how to cook several dishes but later admitted that he did not know how to cook properly.

Shashank also alleged that Tomar had started recording videos inside the house, including his bedroom.

“Tomar even entered my bedroom and recorded videos of expensive and valuable items kept there and sent them to other people,” he said.

Shashank said Tomar demanded an advance payment of Rs 20,000 soon after arriving at the house, while his mother had asked him to cook for two or three days before a decision was taken.

“He was demanding Rs 20,000 from the very beginning. This is what aroused my suspicions. Who demands Rs 20,000 immediately after arriving? He couldn’t cook anything. We became suspicious, so my mother asked him to leave,” Shashank said.

“I was suspicious of him. Someone comes to my house, takes videos and photos, and then goes out and plays the victim card. Something was up,” he added.
