The feature was first introduced to Android beta testers last month and is now available to some users running the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS through TestFlight.
The green dot appears on a contact’s profile photo in the chat information screen when that person is actively using WhatsApp. It replaces the text-based online status previously shown below the profile photo, making it easier for users to see whether a contact is currently available.
The indicator disappears when the contact is no longer active, reflecting their status in real time.
The green dot is currently limited to the chat information screen, which users can access by tapping a contact’s name at the top of a conversation. It does not appear in the chat list or within the conversation screen.
The feature follows WhatsApp’s existing privacy settings. The green dot is not shown for contacts who have chosen to hide their last seen and online status, giving users control over who can view their activity.
The indicator could support a future Contacts hub that WhatsApp is reportedly developing for Android and iOS. The planned feature is expected to include a dedicated section showing contacts who are online or were recently active.
The green dot is currently being rolled out gradually to selected iOS beta testers, with a limited number of users on the App Store version also receiving access for testing.
WhatsApp has not announced when the feature will be released to all users.
