The decision which caught the global cricketing community by surprise was revealed in an address Stokes gave to his temmates before play began on day four of the third Test between England and New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
The address was filmed posted on the team’s official social media account and shared with broadcasters at 3:25pm in the afternoon, shortly before the teams broke for tea.
The ICC, in a letter sent to the ECB as reported by the BBC, says that this footage goes against its standards for playees and matches official areas (PMOA) during international matches.
Article 2.2.11 of the PMOA minimum standards states national cricket federations should: “Ensure that there are no fixed or temporary video cameras or other recording equipment set up within any dressing room used by the teams for the purposes of broadcasting video or audio footage.”
The ICC also informed the ECB that any footage shot in the PMOA must not carry audio or be released before the conclusion of the fixture in question.
According to the BBC, neither the ECB nor the ICC have commented. The letter from the ICC was reportedly sent the day before the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s, when ECB chair Richard Thompson met with Jay Shah, chairman of world cricket’s governing body. The ECB has yet to respond to the ICC.
